Desuperheaters for Ethanol Plants

Desuperheaters add water to superheated steam, conditioning the steam for process use and improving its heat-transfer capability. This can support more effective steam flow while helping reduce boiler loads and fuel costs. The correct design depends on the application, steam piping arrangement and temperature-control requirements.

B-Tech Valve offers spray-ring and probe-type desuperheater designs. The SPAD uses a fixed-nozzle spray ring that clamps between steam pipe flanges, while the LPD uses a variable-nozzle, fully actuated control valve and desuperheater assembly for steam pipes 6 inches and larger.

The SPAD Small Pipe Attemperator Desuperheater uses a fixed-nozzle spray ring and clamps between two steam pipe flanges. It is fed water from a separate temperature control valve. The design is intended for smaller steam piping, with final selection based on the customer’s operating application.

The LPD is intended for steam pipes 6 inches and larger where a variable-nozzle, fully actuated control valve and desuperheater assembly are appropriate. It installs through a 90-degree flanged insertion on the steam pipe and is sized around the customer’s application.

The product range is available in ASME B16.34 pressure classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, 2500 and 2700. Products are temperature rated up to 1,200°F (650°C), subject to the selected design and application requirements.

Sizing typically requires the steam pipe size, operating pressure and temperature, desired outlet conditions, water supply details and installation arrangement. B-Tech Valve sizes products for each customer’s application, helping determine whether a fixed spray-ring or variable-nozzle probe-type design is appropriate.
