Steam Temperature Control Valves

Steam temperature control systems can use fixed-nozzle spray-ring designs or variable-nozzle probe-type designs. SPAD and Steam Attemperator products use a fixed nozzle spray ring that clamps between steam pipe flanges. The LPD uses a probe-type variable-nozzle actuated control valve and desuperheater for larger steam piping applications.

Adjustment should follow the valve design, steam conditions, downstream temperature requirements and the control system supplying water. Fixed-nozzle spray-ring units receive water from a separate temperature control valve, while the LPD combines variable-nozzle control and desuperheating. Use the applicable engineering documentation and consult B-Tech Valve before changing operating settings.

A steam desuperheater injects controlled water into superheated steam to reduce temperature and improve steam suitability for downstream equipment or processes. Applications listed for these products include protecting piping and steam traps, protecting rotating seals, increasing heat-transfer capability and steam flow, and reducing boiler loads and fuel costs.

Selection depends on steam pipe size, application requirements, installation arrangement, pressure class, temperature conditions and the required control method. SPAD is a fixed-nozzle spray-ring design for smaller pipe applications, while LPD is a variable-nozzle probe-type assembly for pipe sizes of 6 inches and larger. The listed products are available in ASME B16.34 pressure classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, 2500 and 2700. The appropriate class depends on the steam system and project requirements.
