Control High Pressure Turbine Bypass Valves

A turbo bypass valve generally controls flow around a turbocharger or turbine to manage operating conditions and protect connected equipment. In industrial steam service, the comparable turbine bypass arrangement controls steam flow around the turbine and may require desuperheating to protect piping, steam traps, rotating seals, and other downstream components.

The LPD Large Pipe Desuperheater is used in steam piping 6 inches and larger. It combines a probe-type variable-nozzle fully actuated control valve with desuperheating capability. Applications include increasing steam heat-transfer capability, protecting piping and steam traps, protecting rotating seals, increasing steam flow, decreasing boiler loads, and reducing fuel costs.

The LPD uses a 90° flanged insertion installation method on the steam pipe. Its probe-type variable-nozzle design is intended for large-pipe applications, with the final configuration selected according to the steam system, pressure class, temperature, and required operating conditions.

The LPD is available in ASME B16.34 pressure classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, 2500, and 2700. Selection should match the system design conditions and applicable plant requirements. B-Tech Valve can provide application guidance for the appropriate pressure-class configuration.

The LPD is temperature rated up to 1200°F (650°C), as specified in the product information. The suitable configuration still depends on the complete steam application, including operating temperature, pressure, pipe size, control requirements, and downstream equipment protection needs.
