Desuperheaters for Petrochemical Plants

Desuperheaters help manage steam temperature before it reaches sensitive downstream equipment. By conditioning superheated steam, they can protect piping, steam traps, and rotating seals from excessive thermal exposure. The appropriate design depends on the steam line, operating conditions, installation arrangement, and required control response.

B-Tech Valve offers fixed-nozzle spray-ring designs and a probe-type variable-nozzle design. The SPAD and Steam Attemperator use a spray ring with water supplied from a separate temperature control valve, while the LPD combines a variable-nozzle actuated control valve and desuperheater for larger steam piping.

The LPD Large Pipe Desuperheater is designed for steam piping 6 inches and larger. It uses a probe-type variable-nozzle, fully actuated control valve and installs through a 90° flanged insertion. Final selection should be based on the application, operating conditions, and required steam control.

The listed desuperheater products are available in ASME B16.34 pressure classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, 2500, and 2700, with product-specific compatibility noted for replacement parts across classes 150 through 2700. Confirm the required class against the plant piping and valve specification.
